The Chadron Cardinals controlled the tempo from start to finish and also played stifling defense while downing Valentine 44-30 for the boys’ championship at the Chadron Rotary Holiday Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Badgers reached the title tilt by overwhelming Custer, S.D., 66-38 in the opening round on Friday night, but they managed less than half that number of points in the finals.

The deliberate Cardinals led by just 6-3 at the end of the first period, but scored 18 points in the second quarter for a 24-13 at halftime margin.

Chadron allowed only three points again in the third quarter to own a commanding 36-16 margin entering the final frame and coast to victory.

“Our 1-3-1 worked well today,” said Chadron coach Eric Calkins. “They don’t have too many shooters and our guys made sure their best one (Jaydon Owen) had to work hard to get his shot.”

Valentine got 21 of its 30 points from two players. Center Kooper Reece scored 11 points and Owen 10.

Chadron didn’t put anyone in double figures, but five Cardinals tallied at least six points. Coy Bila was the leader with nine and Jeff Cerny and Cooper Heusman each added eight.

The Cardinals are now 4-5 for the season and have won the Rotary Classic title four of the seven years it has been held.

Hemingford, which did play in the first round of the classic because blowing snow would have made the trip dangerous on Friday, was present Saturday and defeated Custer 59-41 in the game to decide third place.

Hemingford led by just 31-27 at halftime, but limited the Wildcats to only 14 points in the second half.

The Bobcats were paced by center Brandon Chancellor with 18 points while guards Casey Lashley and Miles Davis scored 15 and 12, respectively. Custer’s Noal Patzlaff took game scoring honors with 19, but managed just two points in the second half.
