The Chadron Cardinal wrestlers had a great meet Saturday in Gordon-Rushville, claiming one title, and placing at least one wrestler in 11 of the 15 total weight classes.

Only Valentine, which defeated Chadron head-to-head on Thursday, also in Gordon-Rushville, finished the invite with more team points, besting the Cardinals second-place 176-point result by 59 points.

Chadron’s second-place finish was led by Vince Eleuterio who defeated Hot Springs’ Donnie Abbot by pin to take the title at 120-pounds.

Jake Lemmon continued a strong season placing second overall in the 145-pound class, and three other wrestlers, Paige Denke (106-pound), Tallon Craig (113-pound), Daniel Wellnitz (132-pound), and Isaiah Beye (195-pound), took third-place in their respective weight classes.

Rounding out Chadron’s strong individual finishes were Cobie Bila, who placed fifth at 126-pounds; Zach Haug, who placed fifth at 152-pounds; Ozzy Fernau, who placed fifth at 160-pounds; Aiden Vaughn, who placed fifth at 182-pounds; Henry Bien, who placed sixth at 113-pounds; Sawyer Haag who placed sixth at 138-pounds; and Kade Waggener who placed seventh at 126-pounds.

Earlier in the week the Cards also traveled east to Gordon for a triangular featuring the Mustangs and Valentine.

Chadron took wins in eight of the 12 classes, defeating the Mustangs 40-17, but the winning wouldn’t hold for the team against Valentine which defeated the Cards 50-15, taking wins in 10 of 13 classes.

Chadron’s lone winners were Clark Riesen, Craig, and Eleuterio.

The Mustang’s suffered a worse fate against the Badgers, going winless in 11 contested matches. At their invite on Saturday, the group finished fifth in team scoring with 111 points, placing wrestlers in a handful of classes including Zane Hamilton’s first-place finish at 170-pounds.

Hamilton defeated Valentine’s Kyle Grooms in a 7-0 decision to win the title.

Saturday’s invite also included both Hay Springs Hawks wrestlers, Austin Kennedy and Bryce Running Hawk.

After going undefeated Thursday at the Crawford Triangular, Running Hawk finished fourth at 182-pounds Saturday in Gordon, losing in the third place match to Bennet County’s Tee Allen by pin.

Lone teammate Austin Anderson placed second overall at 113-pounds after being defeated by Mullen’s Teven Marshall by pin.
