Dana Dunbar struck out 9 batters and gave up only four hits as the Chadron High softball team shutout Scottsbluff 8-0 at Hampton Field on Tuesday evening. It was the Lady Cardinals first home win in two tries this season, and their second victory of the season over Scottsbluff.
Senior catcher Kylee Garrett went 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and a double while driving in four runs.
The Cards got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Kylee Garrett singled home Madisyn Hamar. In the next at bat, Micah Stouffer scored Dana Sunbar on a sacrifice fly to right field to go up 2-0.
The runs continued to pile up in to the third inning for Chadron. A bases loaded double from Garrett brought home the Dunbar sisters and Malia Burwell. An error on a Stouffer infield single brought Garrett across for another run and extended the lead to 6-0.
Dunbar and Burwell would score again on a throwing error in the bottom of the 6th to bring the 8-run rule in to effect.
The win moves the Lady Cardinals record to 3-2 on the season ahead of the McCook Tournament, where they dropped two straight games. Alliance and Gothenburg both defeated the Cardinals. Alliance took a 14-9 win, while Gothenburg nipped past them in a 6-5 outing. Chadron was scheduled to travel to Gering Tuesday before taking part in the Scottsbluff Tournament Friday and Saturday. They will also seek revenge on Alliance Sept. 12 with an away game that starts at 6 p.m.
