Pat Rust

At 6-foot-8, Chadron High junior Pat Rust doesn’t have much difficulty shooting over opponents. He’s shown pulling the trigger against Valentine’s Nathan Flannery during the Cardinals’ 51-40 win Saturday night at home. Rust scored 20 points in three games last weekend while earning more playing time as the season progresses.

The Chadron boys’ basketball team snapped its six-game losing streak Saturday night by downing Valentine 51-40 in the Middle School Gym. The previous night, St. Thomas More revved up its scoring in each quarter and won 64-40 in Rapid City.

As the season nears the end, the Cardinals needed the win over Valentine. The Badgers had notched their second victory of the season at home Friday night, downing Gothenburg 49-40. They also jumped out to an 8-1 lead before the Red Birds began finding the range.

As the Cards warm up, the Badgers cooled off against Chadron’s 1-3-1 zone. The visitors managed just three points in the second quarter, allowing Chadron to own a 21-13 halftime lead.

The Cards were extra hot in the third quarter, meshing eight field goals, including a pair of treys, to move ahead 39-26.

Lots of players contributed in the victory. Colton Olson led the winners with 12 points while both Brayden Richardson and Coy Bila added 11. Turner Tinant paced Valentine with 12 points, all of them on 3-pointers. Richardson had three triples, Bila two and Olson one for the Cardinals.

Chadron also beat the Badgers 44-30 in the finals of the Chadron Rotary Classic in late December.

Chadron got off to a good start at St. Thomas More, jumping out to a 13-5 first-quarter lead. But the Cavaliers, now 7-8 for the season, gained momentum, tallying 15, 19 and 25 points during the ensuing periods while the Cards went 10, 9 and 8.

St. Thomas More pumped in nine treys, including four by leading scorer Caden Casey, a 5-9 sophomore who finished with 16 points. Ryan Wojcik, a 6-1 freshman, contributed 14 points and 6-6 sophomore Ryder Kirsch added 10.

Seniors Jeff Cerny with 12 points and Coy Bila with 10 paced the Cardinals as both sank a pair of threes. Rapidly improving Pat Rust, a 6-8, junior, scored eight points, six of them in the opening frame.

One of the Cards’ top players, sophomore Cooper Huesman, missed the weekend games because of a back problem.

The Cardinals will have some stiff challenges this weekend as they conclude their regular season. They host Sidney, which is 14-7 after edging Gering 68-67 and besting Scottsbluff 62-48 this past weekend, on Friday night and visit Newcastle on Saturday night. The Dogies are having one of their better seasons, standing at 9-3 entering a game at Torrington on Friday night.
