By the time the final buzzer had sounded Saturday night, the Mitchell Tigers had held the Cardinals’ girls to six two-point field goals, one three-pointer, and four successful free-throws, in their 61-17 rout of the Chadron ladies.
Chadron’s 3-0 lead to begin the game would be the last time the Cards had a lead as Mitchell would hit nearly 50 percent of its field goals, and sink 16 of its 23 shots from the line.
Mitchell’s scoring effort was led by senior Jori Peters who had 20 points, including one trey, and sank seven of her eight free-throws. Teammate Keyana Wilfred fell just short of matching Knight’s 20 point night, putting up 18 points of her own, shooting six of eight from the field and six of seven from the line.
Wilfred also led all players in rebounds with 12.
A lack of rebounds and too many turnovers hurt the Cardinals who were led in scoring by Dana Dunbar with seven.
The loss was the Cardinals second to a very good Mitchell team, and fourth consecutive, bringing the girls’ record to 4-6 for the season.
The Lady Cards had their first opportunity to bounce back Tuesday night against Hemingford, but results were not available at time of print. The team will host Alliance this Friday with tip-off scheduled for 5:30pm.
