A strong first half by the Hay Springs Hawks put them in position to add a second ‘W’ to their schedule Friday with a home triumph over South Platte.
En route to a 60-19 victory, the Hawks shut out South Platte during the opening half, scoring 27 points in the first quarter and tacking on 20 more for good measure before the break. Both teams found the end zone for six points in the third quarter, but South Platte won the final frame 13-7.
The Hawks put up 451 all-purpose yards in the contest, with nearly 400 of them coming from the rushing game. Junior Trent Reed was all over the field for 241 rushing yards on 13 carries. Charles Schiaffo carried the ball four times for 113 yards. Sophomore quarterback Baiden Planansky completed one of 2 passes for 18 yards, and Reed tossed it through the air once for 22 yards. Both completed passes found their way to Bryce Running Hawk.
The Hay Springs’ defense snatched away two interceptions for 12 yards thanks to Schiaffo and Coy Wolken, and the Hawks had 62 total tackles on the night. The defense was led by Kaelob Marx with seven solo tackles, including three for losses. Schiaffo, Austin Anderson and Clark Orr each contributed six solo tackles, and Reed added five of his own.
The Hawks will face their first road test for this year’s six-man season against Cody-Kilgore Friday.
