The Spalding Academy Shamrocks needed a little more luck Friday at home against the Hay Springs Hawks. Despite pushing for a second-half comeback, the Shamrocks fell short, falling to the Hawks 26-20 in the first round of the Six-Man playoffs.
A monster game from junior Trent Reed led the Hawks to victory. Defensively, Reed had 17 solo tackles and 2 assists, for 19 total tackles total, then on the other side of the ball ran 35 times for 249 yards, had three rushing touchdowns, and completed a 40-yard pass.
Hay Springs jumped out to a 12-0 lead after the first quarter and held Spalding-Academy scoreless through the first half.
After the break, however, the Shamrocks outscored the Hawks 14-6 in the third quarter, closing the score to 18-14 going into the final quarter. The comeback would fall short, as Hay Springs would add another eight points to the Shamrocks’ six.
The first-round win earned the Hawks a second-round home game Friday against the Riverside Chargers of Cedar Rapids.
The Chargers were undefeated in the regular season and are coming off a first-round, 79-0, trouncing of the Hyannis Longhorns.
