The leader of South Dakota's sole Air Force base will relinquish his command Friday in a ceremony.
Col. Mark Weatherington has served as commander of the 28th Bomb Wing for two years at Ellsworth Air Force Base. His next assignment is to be the military assistant to the the Deputy Secretary of Defense in Washington D.C.
Weatherington will be replaced by Col. Kevin Kennedy, who leaves a post in the Pentagon.
Kennedy served in several operational roles at Ellsworth from 1999 to 2003 and again in 2007 to 2010. He has 3,200 hours of flight experience in the B-1 and T 38 Talon and served as vice commander for the 379th Expeditionary Wing while deployed to Southwest Asia from 2011 to 2012.
Friday's ceremony is scheduled for 2:28 p.m. in the Pride Hangar and is by invitation only. Lt. Gen. Robin Rand, commander of 12th Air Force and Air Forces Southern, will officiate the ceremony.
