HOT SPRINGS - Hot Springs residents Ebun Adelona, age 76, Bill Christman, age 88, and Sam Pierce, age 71, are not letting their ages stop them from exercising regularly. They are actively participating in exercise classes at Bodies in Motion, which is a gym downtown on Chicago Street.

Ebun Adelona has always exercised because she danced professionally. “I feel better when I exercise. It’s like eating and breathing to me. It makes me happy,” she said. “I feel alive, vigorous, and it relieves tension.” She participates in Core Fusion on Monday, Booty Bootcamp on Tuesday and Thursday and a Zumba class also on Thursday.

Bill Christman participates in the Core Fusion, Booty Boot Camp and Kettlebells. Kettlebell exercises build strength and endurance, particularly in the lower back, legs, and shoulders, and increase grip strength.

“I need the exercise,” said Christman, who started his regular exercise program this past year. “Exercise improves mobility, coordination, balance and stamina.”

He also said it helps to be in a group. “It’s a good bunch of people (at Bodies in Motion),” he said. “They are a lot of fun.”

Sam Pierce started exercising about four years ago. “A friend got me running,” he said. “I’m doing what I never thought I could do.”

He has run the 5K a number of times. “My best time in the 5K was 27.9, which is pretty good,” he said. “I’m proud of where I’ve come, from where I was.”

Pierce takes a spin class at Health 4 Life Fitness and is a relief instructor there. He also takes four to five classes a week at Bodies in Motion and rides a peddle bike.

“I like a challenge,” Pierce said. “I have three granddaughters, and I want to at least see them graduate.”

Adelona knows the importance of exercise, especially after getting seriously injured in a car accident a few years ago that left one arm and hand weakened. “The body was built to move, and the older we get the more we need to move to balance out the aging process going on in the body,” she said.

Christman said, “I highly recommend exercise for others my age.”
