DAKOTA DUNES – The Hot Springs Bison boys’ golf team, which placed second earlier this month at the Region 4A championship in Lead, returned home last week after traveling across the state to compete in the 2017 Class “A” Boys’ Golf Championship in N. Sioux City, S.D, where 105 boys were entered from 34 different schools.
The Bison were led by senior Will Christianson who closed out his high school career tying for 43rd place overall, with a 36-hole score of 188 (91/97). He was followed by teammate Jacob Harris, who tied for 79th with a score of 228 (104/114).
Hot Springs’ remaining two team members, John Henry (240 = 124/116) and Zane Cope (245 = 119/126) finished 98th and tying for 99th respectively.
Lucas Schaefbauer of Aberdeen Roncalli was the state champion with a 36-hole score of 149, followed by Kolby Newbort of Tea Area with a 154. St. Thomas More’s Nick Lust, the Region 4A meet medalist, was the highest placing golfer from the Black Hills, as he tied for sixth with a 160.
As a team, the Bison boys finished 16th by scoring a four-person, 36-hole total of 891, which included 18-hole scores of 438 on Day 1 and a 453 on Day 2. Fellow Region 4A teams St. Thomas More (721) and Custer (871) finished in sixth and 15th respectively.
Aberdeen Roncalli won the team title with a score of 649, followed by Dakota Valley in second place with a 674.
