Hot Springs’ Julia Russell goes for an attack at home versus Bennett County earlier this season.

HOT SPRINGS – After dropping a close five-game set versus Southern Hills rival Custer earlier this month, the Hot Springs Lady Bison volleyball team earned some revenge on the road last Friday night in Custer, as they won in four games, 3-1.

Hot Springs won the first two games in exciting fashion, as both went into long extras, by scores of 28-26 and 29-27. The second game featured a 14 point comeback by Hot Springs. Despite dropping the third game 18-25, the Lady Bison prevailed in the fourth game by a 25-17 margin.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Oct. 17, Hot Springs lost on the road in three games 24-26, 12-25 and 16-25.

“This week we had a tough loss to STM but when we traveled to Custer it was a whole different team that showed up to play,” said Hot Springs head coach Jami Klippenstein. “They were a little flat in the first set but did pull out the win. In the second set they were really flat; we were down 10-24 when Madison Russell went to the serving line. The girls just took it point by point all on their own.

“The back row moved their feet and covered the floor while the front row stayed big, aggressive and very smart with ball placement,” Coach Klippenstein said. “The team stayed perfect for 14 unanswered points to come back to tie 24-24. It was just an amazing comeback as they played so well, so smart, and so aggressive. They finished that night with a huge well-fought win.”

Coach Klippenstein added that senior Madison Russell was very solid at the service line to go 30 for 30 for the night. “That is 100 percent serving at its greatest,” she added.

This week, the Lady Bison, now 9-19 on the year, host Oelrichs (5-16 record) on Monday, Oct. 23, for the final game of the regular season. Regional playoffs begin Tuesday, Oct. 31. “We are looking forward to post season,” Klippenstein added.
