WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK - A one-vehicle accident claimed the life of a Custer man, Saturday morning near the north entrance to Wind Cave National Park.
Michael C. Mahutga, age 59 of Custer, died in the accident. Mahutga was traveling south on US385, about ten miles north of Hot Springs, when the 2011 Toyota 4 Runner he was driving drifted off the roadway. Mahutga overcorrected and lost control of the Toyota. It rolled, ejecting Mahutga, who was not wearing a seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mahutga was the only occupant in the vehicle. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Custer County Sheriff’s office and the National Park Service.
