To the Editor:
My letter is in response to the comments of Commissioner Falkenburg as quoted by the Star in the September 12 issue.
“I have feminine tendencies and I think I’d kind of enjoy the cat calls.” - Falkenburg
Commissioner Falkenburg, catcalls are NOT a compliment. A majority of women find catcalls upsetting (NOW.org, 2015). They show a disregard for women by signalling that we are nothing more than our bodies. Catcalls are a form of harassment and at times they can be downright scary.
Commissioner Falkenburg, do you have a mother, wife, daughter, sister, granddaughter or another significant woman in your life? Would you disregard their concerns if they received catcalls at work or anywhere?
I would hope not.
