HOT SPRINGS – The Hot Springs Right to Life (HSARTL) is sponsoring an event called “Why Not You?” on Sunday, Nov. 5, from 2 – 4:30 p.m. at the Mueller Civic Center in Hot Springs. November is recognized as National Adoption month. This event is being held to promote foster care and adoption. Anyone who has questions or wants information about foster care or adoption should attend this event.
The need is great. There is currently the need for approximately 90 homes for foster care and yet there are only 60 in our region. Approximately 30 homes are needed. Foster care is needed for all age groups but there is a particular need for homes for teens and family groups.
There is a false impression that families with children are the ones suited to fostering. This is just one type of foster family. There are foster parents who have never had children, foster parents who are grandparents, foster parents who are single and foster parents who are empty nesters.
There will be representatives from various agencies such as the Dept. of Social Services, Lutheran Social Services, Catholic Social Services, Bethany Christian Services, and Children’s Home Society at the event. There will be speakers to talk about the steps to becoming a foster parent followed by testimony from a foster parent. There will also be speakers to talk about the steps to adoption followed by testimony from an adoptive parent. After each speaker will be a question and answer period.
By attending the event, you are not committing to anything except getting educated about the subject.
In addition to the above event, HSARTL has created an Adoption Assistance Grant to encourage domestic and international adoptions. All applications are welcome, but due to limited funding, HSARTL is unable to award grants to all qualified applicants. HSARTL Adoption Assistance Grants range from $500 - $1000. All funds are dispersed directly to the adoption agency.
There are six application deadlines throughout the year: Feb. 28, April 30, June 30, Aug. 31, Oct. 31, and Dec. 31. To apply for a HSARTL Adoption Assistance Grant you must be a U.S. Citizen; be a resident of Fall River County; have an approved current home study from a licensed child placement agency and/or social worker and be working with a licensed child placement agency.
