The Hot Springs Bison boys’ basketball team played its first two games of the season last week but failed to come up with a win in two close games.

Despite scoring off the opening tip-off, the Bison fell just short in overtime to the Chadron Cardinals who managed to tie the game in the waning seconds of regulation and win the game 65-60 in overtime.

The five point deficit doesn’t do justice to how close the game remained throughout the overtime period, and if a missed Bison three-pointer with twenty-seconds remaining goes in, instead of bouncing off the rim, the game may have had a much different result.

Chadron got good performances from key players in the game, including Cooper Heusman who led all players in scoring with 20. For the Bison, three players, Logan Gooder, Logan Brandt, and Matt Norton, all scored in double-digits. Brandt and Gooder finished with 19, and Norton with 12.

Gooder and Brandt were both on fire at the line in the game with Brandt adding eight points on nine free-throws, and Gooder sinking a perfect four of four.

Later in the week the team travelled to Hill City where they once again fell by a five point margin, despite outscoring the Rangers 13-11 in the final stanza.

The Rangers, who came into the game already 3-1 on the season, took a three point lead at the half and turned it into a seven point lead at the end of the third period after outscoring the Bison 14-10.

Monday the Bison travelled to Oelrichs hoping to secure their first win of the season before the holiday break. Results were not available by time of print.
