Garrett Heil

Rapid City Central's Bridger Kraye grapples with Hot Springs' Garrett Heil during the Rapid City invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday at the Civic Center.

The Hot Springs Bison wrestlers began their week Tuesday, traveling to Alliance, Nebraska for a dual against the Bulldogs, then finished the week Friday and Saturday at the 2017 Rapid City Invite.

Pierre, which has won five state titles in six years, again took the title, finishing with 214 points, just two ahead of Rapid City Stevens, who greatly improved upon their standing last season at the same event.

Despite the strong finishes by Pierre and Stevens, individual titles came from 11 teams. Only three teams, Pierre, Hettinger, and Thunder Basin placed multiple wrestlers in first place.

Two Bison wrestlers placed top-eight this year, led by Garrett Heil who finished fourth at 182-pounds, and Kody Hagan who placed fifth at 145-pounds.

Heil, who was 8-3 at the tournament, was defeated 14-5 by major decision by Rapid City Centrals Bridger Kraye. Hagan’s fifth place finish came in an 8-3 decision over Worland’s Luke Goncalves.

Earlier in the week, the Bison were humbled in Alliance, Nebraska, winning only one match in their dual with the Bulldogs. The lone win was credited to Heil who defeated Bailey Hood in a 13-4 major decision.

Next up for varsity wrestling is the St. Thomas More quad this Thursday.
