NEWELL | People who reside in Butte and Meade counties have a new option when it comes to finding great literature, information and resources and they don’t even have to leave home. The new program is called South Dakota Titles to Go and is available from the South Dakota State Library Overdrive program.

All patrons must do is obtain a library card from their local libraries in Belle Fourche, Newell or Sturgis and they can access all types of books through the system on their Ereaders. Most types of Ereader styles can be supplied be it Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Sony as well as Aluratek LIBRE, En Tourage, iRiver Story HD, Literati Reader, Pandigital Novel, PocketBook Pro and Skytex Primer. A patron can even download ebooks to their laptop or mobile device. A complete list of acceptable devices is available at http://overdrive.com/files/ebook-cheat-sheet.pdf.

Each library requires a patron to have a current library card at the participating library. In Newell that means people can stop in and talk to librarian Glynda Smith to obtain a library card. The library is located at 208 Girard in Newell. The phone number is 456-2179 and hours are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

In Belle Fourche people can obtain a library card by stopping into the library and providing two forms of identification that prove address. People who reside outside of Butte County can also obtain a card by paying a fee of $5 for individual and $10 for family. This fee provides the library service for one year. Children under age 14 are required to have their parents’ signature. The library is located at 905 Fifth Avenue in Belle Fourche. The phone number is 892-4407.

Anyone living in Sturgis, Meade County or in the Meade 46-1 School District is eligible for a card. Individuals ages 65+ can get a card even if they live in adjoining counties. Ages 13 and under must have their parents or guardians fill out the form. The library is located at 1040 Second St., Suite 101 in Sturgis and the phone number is 347-2624. The hours of operation at Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Union Center branch is located at 16948 SD Highway 34 in Union Center. The phone number is 985-5591.

The OverDrive program will provide participating public library patrons the ability to download audiobooks and ebooks from the public library website. Downloadable audiobooks and ebooks are available in a wide variety of popular genres, including bestsellers, fiction, romance, suspense, children's and YA, business, self-help and language learning. Downloadable audiobooks and ebooks may be checked out for a period of time, placed on the patron's computer, burned to a CD or transferred to a portable device. Audiobooks and ebooks are automatically returned when due. Participating libraries will sign a participation agreement with OverDrive, who will take care of all billing and financial aspects directly with the participating library.

The South Dakota Titles to Go program is supported in the local libraries as a free service to their patrons but it isn’t a free program to the libraries. Each participating library pays a fee based on population served. Each participating public library will pay a single annual fee based on population service area (from current NCES data.). Subscription term is January 1 - December 31. The base fee for up to 1,499 patrons is $600, a fee that the participating library pays to offer the free service to their patrons.

After the patron obtains a current library card from their participating library they can access the program by visiting the links listed below for their city/county.

For Newell go to http://www.cityofnewell.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=90&Itemid=65 then click on the South Dakota Titles to Go box. For Sturgis go to http://sturgispubliclibrary.blogspot.com/ then click on the download audiobooks, ebooks tab in the green box. Assistant Director Marjori DeJong said they have 397 patrons active in the South Dakota Titles to Go program. They started the program in May of 2011 when the State Library created the consortium.

Pat Engebretson, Belle Fourche Public Library Director said that they are anxious for people to begin utilizing the program.

“Currently we only have 35 people using the program but they have checked out 110 books since we started on May 31,” said Engebretson. “People need to come into the library, even if they already have a card since we need to give them a password.” To access the Belle Fourche Library site go to http://bellefourchepubliclibrary.blogspot.com/ then click on the South Dakota Titles to Go box on the right side of the page. The site can also be accessed by visiting the Belle Fourche City Library page at http://www.bellefourche.org/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={A319E978-14C7-4525-89EA-D9A80C069ABD}&DE={1EEDC2D3-D527-4CFA-B704-FA48C334B291} and scrolling to the bottom to click on the SD Titles to Go link.

Newell librarian Glynda Smith said the program has been catching on slowly in Newell. Her perspective is that some people do not have eReaders and don’t quite understand the program yet. She encourages people in the Newell, Vale and Nisland area to stop in at the library and talk with her or contact school librarian Gwen Kitzan for more information. Kitzan has utilized the program for the high school students in the Newell district. Those students had checked out approximately 178 books over an eight month period prior to the end of school last spring. Smith hopes the students will resume using the program during this school year.

For those patrons who are utilizing the tools of technology it is a way to access their local library without having to peruse the books on the shelf.
