Frances Baustian is excited that she has an option other than traveling to Spearfish to see movies with the opening of a dinner theater in Sturgis.
Easyriders Dinner Theater opens Friday featuring recliner-style seats, traditional movie concessions along with a full dinner service menu and kids' arcade.
"Finally," Baustian said Monday when she first learned of the new theater in Sturgis.
Sturgis Brown High School teacher and drama adviser June Dill said she also was thrilled to hear about the new theater in Sturgis.
"It may take awhile to catch on," she said. "But I hope Sturgis supports it."
Moviegoers will be able to enjoy popcorn, a burger, a burrito or a host of other menu items while catching the latest flick on the 20-foot screen with digital surround sound.
The idea has been a goal of the city council for the past several years, and local economic development officials and the city approached Easyriders's owners about the possibility of a theater.
Ticket prices are $5 for a movie only, but that can be taken off the bill if dinner is ordered.
Paul Bisson, chairman of the Sturgis Economic Development Corp., said this is another huge step for Sturgis.
"We tried to bring a theater to town in the early 90’s while I was chamber president but we didn’t have a suitable building and new construction was prohibitive," he said.
Bisson and SEDC President Pat Kurtenbach were on hand at last November's Sturgis City Council meeting when the community center was being considered for a theater, much to the dismay of residents who worried about that plan.
Bisson said the two wondered out loud of Easyriders would consider adding a theater to its east room which now is used during the rally and other Sturgis events such as the Mustang Rally and Camaro Rally.
"We ran it by Daniel (Ainslie, city manager) and some other council members before approaching Easy Riders," Bisson said. "They were all excited about it. We were so thrilled when Chad (Jagow, Easyriders manager) jumped at it because they were also thinking of doing something to enhance their year-around business.
A loan from SEDC allowed them to install state-of-the-art equipment.
"We had people asking about when we were opening," Jagow said. "I think the community is going to fall in love with it. It's something Sturgis has needed."
Beginning today, Wednesday, March 19, you can check out the dinner theater as Easyriders previews some of the March Madness NCAA basketball games on the big screen.
