STURGIS | A service of remembrance for the The Four Chaplains and a Salute to Hospitalized Veterans was held on Sunday, Feb. 10 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis.

Master of Ceremonies, Chaplain Willard Olsen, with the VA Black Hills Health Care System opened the service with a message honoring the four heroic World War II Chaplains who lost their lives when the S.S. Dorchester was sunk off Greenland on Feb. 2, 1943.

Wreathes were presented by different braches of the armed services and organizations and displayed in the front of the church for each of the four chaplains.

Myron Volk led the singing of The National Anthem, God Bless America and God Bless our Native Land. Several Chaplains noted this tragic yet heroic event happened 70 years ago.
