DEADWOOD | A Spearfish man whose body was found last week in a remote area of Deadwood apparently died of hypothermia due to exposure, according to Lawrence County Coroner Marty Goetsch.
Christopher Oien, 28, had been missing since January. His body was found at approximately 6:15 p.m. Wednesday southwest of The Lodge at Deadwood by someone searching for deer antlers, according to the Deadwood Police Department.
Deadwood Police Chief Kelly Fuller told the Journal last week that "there were no obvious signs of foul play."
Goetsch determined the preliminary cause of death of Oien on Friday. Deadwood Police released the coroner's finding in an email on Monday.
Goetsch said results from a toxicology test might be available in three to four weeks.
Oien was reported missing on Jan. 16 and had been the subject of an intense search during the past several months, including the use of drones and horseback riders. The release said the body was found in a steep, rugged area.
