ABERDEEN | A McLaughlin man and his ex-girlfriend were sentenced Monday for the beating death of the woman’s 5-year-old daughter on the South Dakota side of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

Matthew St. Pierre, 32, and Desarae Makes Him First, 26, earlier pleaded guilty to murder in the October 2016 death of Gracie Kills in Water, who authorities said died of a tear in her abdomen that led to internal bleeding.

St. Pierre, who lived with his girlfriend and her two children at the time of the incident, was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison; Makes Him First received 30 years. Their prison terms will each be followed by five years of supervised release. U.S. District Court Judge Charles Kornmann said the abuse case is as bad as any he's seen in 22 years on the bench, according to the American News.
