STURGIS | The South Dakota Department of Transportation issued its preliminary count of vehicles on Tuesday showing 469,103 arrived for the 77th Sturgis motorcycle rally, a modest increase over the 2016 rally.

According to the DOT, which tracked vehicles entering Sturgis at nine locations from Aug. 4 through Aug. 13, this year’s event had 1 percent more vehicles compared with 2016, when 463,941 vehicles were counted during the 10-day period.

By day, the largest increase in vehicles this year occurred on the first day of the rally count, Aug. 4, when DOT tracked 11 percent more vehicles than it had in 2016. The greatest decrease in the vehicle count occurred on the last day of the rally survey, Aug. 13, which showed a 15 percent decline in vehicular traffic, according to the DOT report.
