A former Pine Ridge corrections officer pleaded guilty on Friday to involuntary manslaughter for the death of a woman in a July 2015 vehicle collision.
Sophia Janis, 27, of Porcupine, admitted in federal court to killing Theresa Martinez, 58, by driving recklessly while checking Facebook on her cellphone. The driver of the minivan Martinez was riding in, as well as another passenger, were injured in the crash. The incident occurred on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation while Janis was driving a transport vehicle of the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Corrections.
Janis faces up to eight years in prison at her sentencing, which has not yet been scheduled. The tribal corrections department said Janis is no longer working for the agency.
