Lawmakers to take on education, agriculture, health

The following are some of the bills committees of the South Dakota Legislature will consider today, Feb. 5:

7:45 a.m. Senate Education

- SB 194 would establish public charter schools and a State Board for Public Charter Schools.

-SB 193 is a place-holder bill that says only that "Education in South Dakota is hereby enhanced." (Contents of the bill to be determined later.)

7:45 a.m. House Agriculture and Natural Resources

- HB 1140 would give free big game licenses to residents on active duty with the military.

-HB 1171 would authorize hunting mountain lions as predator/varmints in certain areas.

- HB 1208 would reimburse certain motorists involved in vehicle collisions with wildlife.

- HB 1293 provide for the removal of dead deer from certain highways.

7:45 a.m. House Health and Human Services

-HB 1155 would provide for the practice and regulation of licensed midwives.

-HB 1259 appropriate money to detect and prevent Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.

8 a.m. Senate Appropriations

-SB172 would restore $1.4 million of the $2 million Gov. Mike Rounds would cut from the Highway Patrol budget.

-SB 181 would create the South Dakota secondary teachers tuition reimbursement program.

-SB 201 lower test-score eligibility for South Dakota Opportunity Scholarships.
