Incumbent Ron Merwin is seeking his eighth term as Meade County Sheriff.
Merwin, 58, said in a release that his common-sense management approach has saved thousands of taxpayer dollars. Negotiated contracts with other cities and counties to house inmates have allowed the county to pay off a law enforcement building early, he said.
“The long and short of it is,"Merwin said. "Times have changed. I’ve held the budget in line and yet effectively and efficiently performed the sheriff’s duties. I have tried very hard to serve the citizens of Meade County in a professional way and lead an office the people can be proud of."
Merwin is being challenged in the Republican primary on June 5 by retired South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation special agent Pat West.
