Cleo Addison

KADOKA — Cleo Addison, 94, Kadoka, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Cleo R. Orr was born Nov. 24, 1915, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Susan (Berg) Orr. At an early age she moved with her family to Midland. She grew up and received her education in Midland, graduating from Midland High School.

Cleo was united in marriage to Leonard M. Addison on Feb. 7, 1938, in Midland. They ranched in the Stamford area until their retirement. After they retired from the ranch, they moved to Belvidere, and later into Kadoka.

Cleo’s husband, Leonard, preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 2001. She continued to live at the Kadoka Nursing Home, where she resided until her death.

Grateful for having shared her life include her daughter, Kathleen Leutenegger and her husband Joe of Kadoka; her son, Leonard Addison of Rupert, Idaho; seven grandchildren, September and her husband Cory, Shawna and her husband Richard, Shanesa and her husband Wade, Starette and her husband Brian, Melodie, Memory and Monica; 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband Leonard, Cleo was preceded in death by a daughter, Melody as an infant; a grandson, Shane L. Leutenegger; a daughter-in-law, Joan Addison; her parents; two sisters, Jean Williams and Virginia Hinker; and two brothers Charles and Roger Orr.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, with a 7 p.m. vigil service at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at the church, with Father Bryan Sorensen as celebrant. Interment will follow the luncheon at the Belvidere Cemetery.

The family requests memorials be directed to the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Milford Benoist

EAGLE BUTTE — Milford Benoist, 75, Eagle Butte, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at his home.

Arlene L. Bubel

RAPID CITY — Arlene L. Bubel, 72, went to be with the Lord Monday, Nov. 30, 2009.

Arlene was born in Pipestone, Minn., Feb. 9, 1937, to Harold and Grace (Roberts) Gilmore. She graduated from Pipestone High School in 1955.

Arlene married Ronald R. Bubel in March of 1957 at Pipestone. Arlene worked closely with her husband in their chiropractic practice in Wessington Springs and Huron as the office administrator and x-ray technician until their retirement. 

Arlene is survived by her children, Janet (Michael) Mignard, Andover Minn., Mark (Tina) Bubel, St. Paul, Minn., Debra (Randy)

Strobridge, Grand Haven, Mich., and Trisha (Michael) Sweet, Edina, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Ethan Mignard, Kristen and Grace Bubel, Sarah, Elisabeth, Andrew, and Rachel Strobridge, and Emily, Matthew, and Abigail Sweet; two brothers, William (Mary) Gilmore, Savage, Minn., and Dale (Kathy) Gilmore, South St. Paul, Minn.; her sisters-in-law, Lois Berndt, Shoreview, Minn., and Eileen Pierce, Effingham, S.C.; and brother-in-law,

Norman Bubel, Pasco, Wash; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ronald. 

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the South Canyon Baptist Church, 3333 W. Chicago, with Pastor Paul Lloyd and Pastor Brent Reeves officiating.

Robert H. Darling Sr.

RAPID CITY — Robert H. Darling Sr., 77, Rapid City, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at Custer Regional Senior Care.

 Robert served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955.

Survivors include his wife, May Darling, Rapid City; three sons, Phillip Darling, Wasilla, Alaska, and Johnny Darling and Robert Darling Jr., both of Rapid City; his brother, Theodore “Ted” Darling, Rapid City; his sister, Karen, Nebraska; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Kirk Funeral Home. Inurnment, with military honors by the VFW Post 1273 and the S.D. Army National Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Erna May GortmakerRAPID CITY — Erna May Gortmaker, 70, Rapid City, died early Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at her home.

 

She was born March 17, 1939, in Highmore and graduated from Miller High School. She married Daniel Gortmaker on June 19, 1960. They moved to Rapid City in 1962 where they raised their family.   

Erna’s family and friends were most important to her. She was a care giver, and had taken care of several elderly ladies without family in Rapid City. She loved flowers and her garden. She enjoyed collecting bears, miniature dogs, tins, etc. She had many, many friendships that she enjoyed throughout her entire life. She enjoyed shopping, traveling and making sure that everyone that she loved always received a gift for Birthdays, Anniversaries, graduations, weddings, and for her most favorite time of the year Christmas.

She was a proud member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, delivered flowers to shut-ins, nursery care provider and a volunteer for charity at the Cornerstone Rescue Mission. She also enjoyed working as a RSVP volunteer.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel and her son, Mark (Brenda)

Gortmaker, all of Rapid City; two daughters, Kim (Dave) Lusk, Beatrice, Neb., and Karen Gortmaker (Ryan Eid), Rapid City; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brother, Alvin (Cindy) Schock, Phoenix, Ariz.; and her sister, Eldora (Ken) Mowry, Sun City, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Kirk Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, 710 Kansas City St., with Rev. Bob Evans officiating. Committal will follow at Pine Lawn Cemetery.

A time of fellowship and luncheon will then follow back at the church.

Judy Kay Haub

RAPID CITY — Judy Kay Haub, 63, Rapid City and formerly of Grand Junction, Colo., died  Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at a local nursing home.

Judy was born Feb. 2, 1946, in Aberdeen to Leo and Josephine (Baer) Cihak. Judy was united in marriage to Harvey L. Haub on Oct. 9, 1965 in Rapid City. She was a very loving wife and mother who enjoyed her “hugs.” Judy enjoyed the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the Black Hills of South Dakota, camping, and watching the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies. She served on the Board of Directors for Little League and continued to do so after her children were done playing.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey Haub of Rapid City; her daughter, Sheila (Chris) Sharp of Amarillo, Texas; her son, Lee (Paula) Haub of Grand Junction, Colo., and Paula’s daughter, Wynter; her sister, Jo Ann Schmitz and her brother, Jerry (Jannie) Cihak, all of Rapid City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two infant daughters.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. Christian Wake Service at Kirk Funeral Home. There will be a viewing at the church for one hour before services.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, with the Rev. Michel Mulloy presiding. Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer’s Association – S.D. Chapter, 1000 N. West Ave., No. 250, Sioux Falls, SD 57104-1366.

Lucille Plato

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Lucille Plato, 79, Gillette, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include her sons, Terry Plato, Buffalo, and Alan Plato, Rozet; one sister, Louise Wildey, Conner, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Walker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Carr of First United Methodist Church officiating. 

Burial will follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Campbell County Memorial Hospice Hospitality House.

Enola Florence Sorlie

PIEDMONT — Enola Florence Sorlie, 80, Piedmont, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospice House.

Enola was born Dec. 7, 1928, at Cole to Frank and Florence (Chinnock) Fogerty. She attended country school and graduated from Lemmon High School.

On June 3, 1949, she married Gordon Sorlie at Lemmon. They lived in Lemmon until 1959 when they moved to Rapid City. They moved to Piedmont in 1963.

Enola was a homemaker and mother. She raised her family and after her husband’s retirement they enjoyed traveling and camping as a family.

Enola was a member of Our Lady of the Black Hills.

Survivors include her son, Ken (Cathy) Sorlie, Green River, Wyo.; three grandchildren, Shannon Brown, Chris Sorlie and Sarah Sorlie; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elenor (Ray) Evenson, McIntosh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; one son, Lloyd; one sister; and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

A rosary service will be offered at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at the church, with Father Mark McCormick officiating. Burial follows at the Piedmont Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont.

SPEARFISH — Peter John Verhulst, 84, Spearfish, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at his home.

Survivors include his wife Cora, Spearfish; his children, LaVea, Paul, Peter “Clark,” Zane, Harley and Lance; Cora’s children, Jeanette, Nick, Pat, May-lynn, Janet, Kellie and Kim; one sister, Larine Clyde; 24 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

There will be a vigil at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at the church. Burial will be at St. Aloycious Cemetery in Sturgis.

Doug White

PINE RIDGE — Doug White, 88, Pine Ridge, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at Rochester, Minn.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary White, Manderson; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A one-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the hall, with Mr. Charles McGaa officiating. Traditional Lakota Services will be provided by Rick Gray Grass. Burial will be at the Swimmer Family Cemetery in Manderson.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
