Martin Matthew Warvi

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Martin Matthew Warvi died Friday morning, Jan. 7, 2011, at Hunstville Hospital after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Martin graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1957 with a degree in Civil Engineering and an ROTC commission to the U.S. Army. He served 24 years in the U.S. Corp of Engineers to include tours in Libya, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and twice in Vietnam. He retired in 1982 as a Lt. COL and continued his career at Teledyne Brown Engineering until his full retirement in 2002.

Martin married Virginia in 1957. They had four daughters, Ree Ann Jolly, Katherine Spencer, Cynthia Marowski and Patricia Warvi. He had four grandchildren, Melissa Marowski, Matthew Spencer, Cadence Jolly and Miranda Jolly.

Other than his family, Martin’s passion was his horses. This hobby started with a single Shetland pony when his children were young as a family affair to keep his girls engaged and out of trouble. He was active in the formation of the Huntsville Pony Club years ago. He was a longstanding member of the Mooreland Foxhunt. This hobby evolved over the years into a small horse breeding business. He was proud of the horses he had bred that were in the horse community and always dreamed about the possible achievements of the upcoming foals.

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. CST Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Berryhill Funeral Home, Visitation will be for one hour before services.

In lieu of fresh flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the Huntsville Botanical Garden.
