The Rapid City Police Department declined Monday to release any more information on the police pursuit Friday evening that resulted in a traffic death.

In an email to the Journal, Police Chief Steve Allender said the department was closed Monday for Native Americans' Day and thus the information was unavailable. He did say, however, that the department would likely release some names of those involved in the pursuit and crash by today.

Allender also said he wouldn't be adding much more detail to the account of events.

"Because the investigation into the pursuit and accident is ongoing, I don't think we'll be commenting on the details until we are done with the investigation," he wrote.

One person was killed and four others were hurt Friday night after a driver being pursued by Pennington County sheriff's deputies crashed into three other vehicles at E. North and Spruce streets in Rapid City.

The Rapid City Police Department’s Critical Accident Reconstruction Team and the South Dakota Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.

A call Monday afternoon to Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom wasn't returned by press time.
