The parent company of Runnings Farm and Fleet is looking to buy the old Target building at the Rushmore Mall.
Target Corp. confirmed the deal for the 101,500-square-foot building on Tuesday.
"Target has entered into a contract to sell its property in Rapid City to Runnings Supply," said spokewoman Anna Anderson.
Runnings is conducting its due diligence investigation into the potential investment, so a sale closing date is still tentative, she said.
The farm retailer's interest in the Target location surfaced in January, but a Runnings' spokesman wouldn't comment on any talks with Target.
Running Supply Inc. submitted to the Rapid City growth management office a plan to add a 15,000-square-foot outdoor storage area on the north side of the building. The city Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss the plan today.
City planning staff members are recommending the commission hold off on the request until the group's May 21 meeting.
In a report to the commission, staff members state they have not received answers to some of the city's requests for additional documentation. Those requests were first made in March.
The city planning staff wants Running Supply to detail lighting, signage, air handling equipment and trash bin placement at the site. The company also needs to explain how it will deal with utilities under the proposed addition. The company should apply for an air quality permit before construction and allow for access to a parking lot nearby, the report states.
The addition's appearance also is a potential issue for the city. The development plan from Runnings doesn't describe what building materials will be used for the structure or describe its roof's color.
"Staff has serious concerns about how the proposed addition will match the existing structures at Rushmore Mall," states the staff report.
A call to Running Supply wasn't immediately returned.
Running Supply Inc. is based in Marshall, Minn., and has a Farm and Fleet retail location in Rapid City at 1555 Haines Ave.
