Authorities have identified the hunter who accidentally shot two young men while he was hunting turkeys near Custer last week.

Ronald Klusken of Wisconsin was cited by a state Game, Fish & Parks officer for failure to follow conditions of his hunting license, according to Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler.

Klusken said that on Friday, April 25, he was walking through some heavy brush when he thought he saw a turkey running, and he fired his shotgun, Wheeler said. The blast went through the trees, and some of the pellets hit Brent Ellman, 18, of Larchmont, N.Y., and Alex Young, 20, of Walnut Creek, Calif., who were sitting on a rock along S.D. Highway 89 about four miles north of Custer.

Young was treated at Custer Regional Hospital and released. Ellman was released the next day.

Both were with a group that had been climbing in the Needles area, Wheeler said.
