A controlled burn covering 55 acres took place Monday at Oahe Dam, north of Pierre.

The burn was done jointly by the state Game, Fish & Parks Department and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

An official says the burn took about three hours to complete and covered the grassland area in front of the dam.

Fire was used to clear the face of the dam so corps officials can check for any possible damage to the structure during its annual evaluation.
