PIERRE - Almost 53 million people saw the July 3 fireworks display at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, according to the state Office of Tourism.
That's because the display was broadcast live via satellite to media across the nation, the tourism office said in a release.
"The fireworks satellite feed is a powerful marketing tool for the Office of Tourism," said Billie Jo Waara, state tourism director. "It allows us to reach millions of potential visitors to South Dakota, and gives us national exposure for a very small fraction of what it would cost to advertise to all of those millions."
The Office of Tourism said ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX and The Weather Channel were among outlets that aired Mount Rushmore fireworks footage.
