SIOUX FALLS - An Aberdeen girl who progressed into the fifth round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., was eliminated Thursday.
Thirty-three spellers advanced to the sixth round, but Rebecca Rehberger misspelled the botanical term "siphonogamous."
The semifinals continued Thursday, with the winner set to be crowned Thursday night.
The afternoon semifinals were televised for the 14th year by ESPN, with the finals to air on ABC in prime time for the second consecutive year.
Rehberger who correctly spelled "geostationary" and "orenda" in previous rounds, just finished the eighth grade at Trinity Lutheran School.
