Criminal charges apparently are moving ahead against Native American activist Russell Means nearly two weeks after he staged a fishing protest at Sheridan Lake.

South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Department regional supervisor Mike Kintigh said Tuesday that investigating officer Jim McCormick met Monday with prosecutors with the Pennington County State's Attorney's office. Kintigh said McCormick was at Sheridan Lake the day of the protest.

Means had invited several people to fish with him without a license. He has said that the Fort Laramie Treaty allows him and all tribal members to fish without a license.

Kintigh directed questions about the case to deputy state's attorney Lara Roetzel, who was unavailable for comment late Tuesday.
