RAPID CITY - Central High School was evacuated shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday after a small explosion inside the building.
Toni Broom, a secretary in the superintendent's office, said a small explosion had occurred in the building, prompting the evacuation.
At 1:50 p.m., Superintendent Peter Wharton said school and law enforcement officials were gathering all the facts before making any public announcement.
"We're working with law enforcement to do what's in the best interest of the students," Wharton said.
Rapid City police and fire department officers were on the scene.
All of the students were evacuated to the civic center by 2 p.m.
Central students will be released at 2:30 p.m., Broom said.
She said at 2 p.m. that the school district will release more information soon.
