Women and children are now being offered new foods through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children (WIC). Effective Sept. 1, WIC participants will have new choices including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain options, additional canned fish choices, and infant baby food.
The changes encourage healthy eating, long-term breastfeeding and obesity prevention. The new foods are lower in fat and higher in fiber, and some substitutions are available to meet cultural preferences. For more information, go to http://doh.sd.gov/wic/.
