South Dakota Democrats decided this past weekend to wait before a potential change that would let independents vote in their primary.

The state Democratic Party says it would have been in a time bind if it tried for the change this year. The party would have had to meet both the secretary of state's ballot printing deadline and get the national party's approval.

The state party's executive secretary, Rick Hauffe, says the process would not be complete for 30 days and possibly longer.

South Dakota's primary is June 3.

Democratic leaders said it was wise to wait, considering the tight deadlines.
