If you see cars backed up Friday morning on St. Joseph Street, it's not a traffic jam; it's people waiting in line to give.

The annual KOTA Care & Share Food Drive bagel giveaway event will be from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., or whenever the bagels run out.

There have been back-ups in the past, but this year, police and their electronic signs will direct drivers in an effort to move traffic more efficiently.

Police will direct people who are interested in participating to stay in the left lane of St. Joe. People who don't want to participate should stay in the center and right lanes.

Drivers can pull up to the KOTA station between Fifth and Sixth streets to receive a white chocolate bagel from Black Hills Bagels and a cup of Dark Canyon coffee in exchange for a donation of non-perishable food or money to benefit the Community Food Banks of South Dakota and Church Response.

"Whatever people can donate will be great," Lena Miller, promotions director for KOTA, said. "Please give."

She said a new addition this year will be a volunteer in a Santa Claus costume to "keep people in the spirit of giving."

Although canned food is always needed, local food banks right now are especially in need of dry goods such as cereal, pasta, rice and peanut butter. Also, canned meat and cans of kidney beans and other high-fiber beans can be hard to come by.

Both food banks said donations of money go further than donations of food because they can buy food as cheaply as 10 pounds for a dollar.
