A federal judge in Wyoming is expected to take more testimony this week in connection with a 280-mile railroad extension that would allow as many as 34 coal trains a day to cross South Dakota and Minnesota.

The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern railroad is seeking to take land for the project by eminent domain from about 30 people in Wyoming and South Dakota.

The judge must decide if the project is in the public interest and if DM&E negotiated in good faith to buy the land.

If the railroad gets favorable rulings, more hearings will be held to set the price of the property.

Several landowners are expected to testify before the week is through.

The trial began May 27.
