A winter storm watch has been posted for areas north and east of the Black Hills beginning Wednesday night through Thursday morning.

A low-pressure system will move off the Rockies on Wednesday, bringing as much as six inches of heavy snow to portions of northwestern and central South Dakota, according to Mitchell Erickson with the National Weather Service in Rapid City.

Rapid City could see 1 to 3 inches of snow with the weather system that is expected to skirt the hills, Erickson said.

Temperatures will dip into the upper 20s Wednesday night, but should return to the upper 30s Thursday as the system moves out of the area.

Conditions will improve for the weekend. Temperatures should be back in the 50s by Saturday.
