It's "abundant moisture" that many places had to shovel or sweep out of the way on Friday.

And Saturday could bring a repeat performance from the strong early winter storm system that

dumped as much as 8 inches of snow in the Deadwood and Spearfish areas of Lawrence County,

according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City.

Forecasters posted a winter storm warning for much of the Black Hills, northwestern South Dakota

and northeastern Wyoming until noon Sunday. A warning means that severe conditions are

occurring or soon expected.

From Friday night to Saturday morning, another 3 to 6 inches of snow were expected in the northern

higher elevations. A break in the system was predicted for this afternoon, only to see the worst of

the storm arrive ahead of calming drier air.

"The potential exists for heavy snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches," the weather service said.

The evening storm is to taper off by late Sunday morning,

The combination of snow or rain and dropping temperatures will create hazardous conditions, the

weather service said, alerting motorists and people headed outdoors, like hunters and recreational

enthusiasts.

Snow measurements reported by observers to the weather service:

* 8 inches: Areas near Deadwood and Spearfish.

* 6 inches: 1 mile south/southeast of Belle Fourche.

* 5.5 inches: 3 miles east/northeast of Newell.

* 5 inches: Belle Fourche.

* 4 inches: Sundance, Wyo.

* 3 inches: Newell and Whitewood.
