ABERDEEN - The Aberdeen City Council is considering a proposal to ban the use of cell phones while driving.
City Attorney Adam Altman drafted a measure to make it illegal to use cell phones for talking, text-messaging or paging. It would apply to handheld and handsfree cell phones.
The proposal also would make it illegal to use other communications devices while driving, like digital assistants and laptop computers.
The council asked Altman to change the ordinance to make the offense secondary, not primary. That means someone would have to break another law, such as speeding, before being pulled over for using a cell phone.
No date was set for a vote on the proposal.
