Three small fires were reported in the region Friday morning, with two of them contained.
The Lost Fire southwest of Hot Springs was reported between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. and was contained at a tenth of an acre, according to John Bear, public information officer for the Northern Great Plains Joint Information Center in Rapid City.
The fire was apparently caused by lightning, Bear said. One engine from the South Dakota Division of Wildland Fire Suppression and the Cascade Volunteer Fire Department responded. The fire was on Black Hills National Forest land west of the burn area from the Alabaugh Fire last month.
There were two small fires reported in northwest Nebraska.
The 1.5-acre Trail Head Fire, reported about 6 a.m. west of Chadron State Park south, was fully contained by 11:30 a.m., Bear said.
The Chadron Creek Fire 15 miles southwest of Chadron was reported about 11:15 a.m. and had burned about 2.5 acres. Full containment was expected shortly after noon, Bear said.
The Northern Great Plains Joint Information Center declared a red flag warning from noon to 9 p.m. Friday because of high temperatures and low humidity.
"We're hoping everybody out there is real careful today with any activities that involve fire," Bear said.
