Rapid City police arrested 14 people on suspicion of driving under the influence in a sobriety checkpoint Saturday night.
The police, the Pennington County Sheriff's Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol set up the checkpoint at the 1400 blocks of West Main Street and Omaha Street just west of downtown Rapid City between 11:30 p.m. Saturday night and 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
The agencies were assisted by volunteers from MADD, the Police Cadets, police Auxiliary, and others.
Police Lt. James Johns said a checkpoint of this size requires a considerable amount of planning and coordination, and reminded everyone not to drink and drive and to wear their seatbelts.
The agencies announced in July that they would conduct sobriety checkpoints in August in several South Dakota counties.
