Authorities in Jones County say a kayaker drowned on the Bad River when his craft became trapped between two trees and flipped over, submerging him.

Members of the Pierre Rescue Squad pulled the man's body from the fast-moving river about 70 miles southwest of Pierre-Fort Pierre late Saturday evening.

Deputy Fire Chief Ian Paul says recent rains increased the river's speed, and the water current bent the kayak, trapping the man inside after it flipped.

Paul says the water was rising as rescuers attempted to retrieve the body. He says a jet ski and a rubber raft were used for a surface search before two divers entered the water.
