Corps postpones spring rise over flooding concerns

Flooding concerns have led the Army Corps of Engineers to push back plans to release extra water into the Missouri River this week.

Agency officials say the annual spring rise on the river may happen later this week or not at all, depending on the weather.

Heavy rainfall has caused some flooding this week in central Missouri. The corps is also seeing larger than expected flows from tributary rivers feeding into the Missouri River.

The annual release of extra water is meant to encourage spawning by the pallid sturgeon, a fish on the endangered species list.

The spring rise is designed to mimic increases that used to occur naturally before dams were built above the river.
