HIGHMORE - Nearly 600 people packed the Highmore Memorial Auditorium Sunday for an auction to help the two daughters of Pam Huber, the city's slain finance officer.

Huber was shot in the head on Oct. 28 and died later at a Sioux Falls hospital.

Her husband, former Highmore police chief Ken Huber, is charged with first-degree murder and an alternate count of first-degree manslaughter.

Residents donated food, knives and quilts for the auction and donated the proceeds to a trust fund set up to assist the girls with education and living expenses

Auctioneer Ken Branine, a former Highmore resident, said the community has been awesome with the outpouring of donations. "It gives everybody a warm feeling," he said.

Pam Huber's daughters are staying with an aunt and uncle. The money from the auction will go into a trust fund for their education and living expenses.

The effort also raised more than $2,300 in checks, and more money has been coming in every day.

"These are the types of things that were the old way of helping your neighbor," said Marv Mewes of Highmore. "Being willing to help and giving the love and support to get through, and it can only be done by good people.

"It's very touching, it's very hard. You talk about it and it brings a little tear. Everyone that is here is here to help a family that needs help."

"She's a very good friend of mine, so it's been a hard two months," Kristi Hinkle of Highmore said.
