PIERRE - Gov. Mike Rounds has signed a bill that changes the penalties for providing pot to children.

The maximum prison term for supplying minors with a small amount of marijuana will be two years in prison.

Penalties would be incrementally increased for larger amounts of marijuana given to minors, reaching a maximum of 25 years in prison for 1 pound or more.

It is currently a felony in South Dakota to supply any amount of marijuana to a minor, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The new law goes on the books July 1.
