PIERRE - The number of human West Nile cases in South Dakota grew to 81 this week, up from 62 a week earlier.
Three people, all in the 80-89 age group, have died this summer.
West Nile is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.
The state Health Department said the virus has been detected in 38 of the state's 66 counties.
South Dakota had 113 human cases and three deaths from West Nile in the 2006 transmission season.
