PIERRE - The 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone at the South Dakota Capitol will be observed June 20.

Gov. Mike Rounds says the Capitol has withstood the test of time, which is a testament to the work done by those who built it and the people who have since maintained the building.

Capitol construction began in 1905, and it was occupied in 1910. The cornerstone was put into place in June 1908.

It cost about $900,000 to build.

The cornerstone contains a time capsule with articles from the construction period, but officials say it won't be opened because of the cost and chance of structural damage.
